  6. continued use.  The author assumes no responsibility for damages caused by
  7. this program.   Make sure to back up (hotsync) your data before installing

  13. You are free to use this program for up to 30 days in order to
  14. evaluate it.  If you continue to use it beyond 30 days, you must

  21. TRANS.PRC    -  The Program that does the actual translating between languages.
  22. SPANISH.PDB  - The English to Spanish Database file.
  23. SPANISH2.PDB - A larger version of the English to Spanish Database file.
  24. README.TXT   - This file.
  25. ORDER.TXT    -  An order form to purchase other DDH Products.

  27. -------------------------- Installation ----------------------------------
  28.  
  29. First, make sure you have enought free space on your pilot.  To do so, run
  30. the Memory application on the pilot.  If you do not have at least 112K
  31. free you cannot install either database.  To install the large database and
  32. the translate application, you must have at least 204K free.  If you don't
  33. have enough for this, you will either have to choose to delete apps from the
  34. same Memory application, or choose to not install this program until you have
  35. that amount of free memory.
  36.  
  37. To install Translate onto your Pilot, run the INSTAPP.EXE program which resides
  38. in the same directory as the Pilot Desktop software.  This program will allow
  39. you to specify that a .PRC file should be downloaded to the Pilot during the
  40. next hotsync.  Choose to download both the TRANS.PRC and the SPANISH.PDB or
  41. SPANISH2.PDB to your pilot.  Please be aware that this PDB file is huge
  42. relative to many of the programs you may have installed and it therefore
  43. takes longer to install.  In addition, if the backup checkbox is set in the
  44. preferences portion of the Translate application, this PDB file will be
  45. backed up each time HotSync is run, and this too will take some time.  See
  46. later on in this file for more details on this setting.

  49. ----------------------- Instructions For Use ------------------------------
  50. --Selecting a Language
  51. If you have more than one language installed, then running the Translate
  52. application will bring up a language selection screen.  From here you can
  53. choose which language you would like to translate to/from.  To do this, touch
  54. the language in the list box that you would like to use.  If there are no
  55. languages loaded into the pilot, you will not be able to get past this screen.
  56.  
  57. --The Main Screen
  58. The screen contains two fields, the English Word and the Spanish Word.  There
  59. are also buttons: <<, <, To [Language], >, and >>, under the English word, and
  60. buttons: <<, <, To English, >, and >>, under the Spanish word.  In addition,
  61. there are Edit Entry and Add Entry buttons along the bottom of the screen,
  62. and New Word and New Phrase buttons along the top of the screen.

  64. --English To Spanish word
  65. To translate from English to the Spanish word, touch the English field
  66. with the stylus and then write your word in the graffiti area.  When you are
  67. finished writing the word to translate, press the 'To [Language]'
  68. button.  The result should show in the Spanish word's field below.

  70. --Spanish word To English
  71. To translate from a Spanish word to English, touch the Spanish word field
  72. with the stylus and then write your word in the graffiti area.  When you are
  73. finished writing the word to translate, press the 'To English' button.  The
  74. result should show in the English field above.

  76. The program will always attempt to find the exact word you entered.  If it
  77. finds the word you will see the word 'Found!' in the middle area of the
  78. screen.  If it cannot find the word you entered, it will search for the word
  79. as the start of another word.  If finds it this way the screen will show
  80. 'Found within word!', and the closest word in the language you enter will be
  81. shown over the field you entered text on.  If it still cannot find the word,
  82. it will search for the closest match of the word, and show 'Closest match!',
  83. and show the word's closest match and it's translation.  At any time during
  84. this search, the cancel button can be pressed to abort the search.
  85.  
  86.     --Additional Buttons
  87.     The << and >> buttons will "rewind" and "fast forward" to the first or
  88.     last word in that list, respectively.  If you press << under the English
  89.     word you will get the first word in the English list, and it's equivalent
  90.     Spanish word also.  If you were to press >> under the Spanish word,
  91.     you would get the last Spanish word in the list, and it's associated
  92.     English word also.

  94.     The < and > buttons will go back or forward one entry in the list,
  95.     respectively.   If after translating a word, you were to press > under the
  96.     English word, you would get the next English word and it's equivalent
  97.     Spanish word.

  99.     --Edit Entry Button
  100.     This button brings up the edit screen which allows you to edit the current
  101.     entry.  There is also a choice to delete the current entry.  To edit the
  102.     entry, just change the fields you desire changed, and press the save button.
  103.     If you change your mind about editing the words, press the Cancel button, to
  104.     return to the main screen.

  106.     --Add Entry Button
  107.     This button brings up the Add Entry screen which allows you to add a new
  108.     entry.  To add an entry, just complete the fields you desire to add, and
  109.     press the save button.   If you change your mind about adding the words,
  110.     press the Cancel button, to return to the main screen.

  112.     --New Word Button
  113.     This button blanks out both fields to allow you to enter a new word to
  114.     translate.

  116.     --New Phrase Button
  117.     This button takes you to the phrase translation screen, where you can
  118.     write sentences and have them translated for you.

  120.     --Export Button
  121.     Pressing this button will export the current entry to the Flash!
  122.     application. This button will only show on the screen if you have both
  123.     enabled Flash! exporting in the Preferences section, and you have the
  124.     Flash!  program installed on your PalmPilot.  For more information, see
  125.     the section on Preferences below.

  128. --The Translate Phrase Screen
  129. The screen contains two multi-line fields, the English Phrase and the
  130. Spanish Phrase.  There are also buttons: To [Language], and To English.
  131. In addition, there are New Word and New Phrase buttons along the top of the
  132. screen.  During a translation, a cancel button appears, and can be pressed to
  133. abort the search process.

  136. --English Phrase To Spanish phrase
  137. To translate from English to the Spanish language, touch the English field
  138. with the stylus and then write your sentence in the graffiti area.  When
  139. you are finished writing the sentence to translate, press the 'To
  140. [Language]' button.  The result should show in the Spanish phrase's field
  141. below.

  143. --Spanish word To English
  144. To translate a Spanish phrase to English, touch the Spanish phrase field
  145. with the stylus and then write your sentence in the graffiti area.  When
  146. you are finished writing the sentence to translate, press the 'To
  147. English' button.  The result should show in the English field above.

  149. NOTE: The Phrase translation used in the program does not make any attempts
  150. at being grammatically correct.  Rather, it works by searching for an exact
  151. match for each word.  If it does not find an exact match, it leaves the word
  152. in the original language and puts square-brackets [] around the word.  While
  153. very few sentences will yield a perfect translation, this feature can still
  154. be quite useful for getting the 'jist' of a sentence quickly.

  156.      --New Word Button
  157.        This button brings you back to the word translation screen where you
  158.        can enter a new word to translate, or add and edit entries.

  160.      --New Phrase Button
  161.        This button blanks out both fields for you to start writing a new
  162.        phrase to translate.

  165. --Choose Language
  166. From the File pull down menu, you can bring up the Choose Language choice,
  167. which will allow you to switch to a different language, as well as delete an
  168. individual language database. This screen contains a list of languages
  169. available and OK button.  To switch languages, touch the language of your
  170. choice with the stylus and press the OK button.  To delete a language, touch
  171. the language of your choice with the stylus, and press the Menu silkscreen
  172. button to bring down the menu.  Select Delete Language from the File
  173. drop-down menu and answer yes to the confirmation screen.  The language will
  174. be deleted from the list.

  176. NOTE: The shareware demo version only functions with the 2 Spanish databases
  177. distributed with it.
  178.  
  179. --Preferences
  180. From the File pull down menu, you can bring up the Preferences choice,
  181. which will allow you to toggle the HotSync backup setting for whichever
  182. language database is currently in use. When The Backup Database checkbox is
  183. checked, the entire database is backed up on the next HotSync.  If the
  184. checkbox is not checked, the database will not be backed up.  Since the
  185. databases are rather large, the HotSync can take a long time if it has to
  186. back up these languages every time.  So until a conduit is written, this
  187. measure serves to allow the user to select when the databases will be backed
  188. up.  You should only set this checkbox after making serious changes to the
  189. database.   After selecting your choice, press the OK button at the bottom of
  190. the screen.
  191.    The next option allows one to setup the exporting of entries to
  192. the Flash! application.  From the Flash! author Jaime Quinn

  195.   Flash! is a personal trainer for your mind, based on the concept of flash
  196.   cards. Its "learning" mode conforms to the latest learning research by
  197.   quizzing you on a personal schedule that adapts to the difficulty you have
  198.   learning each individual fact; in "quiz" mode you can evaluate your
  199.   progress.  Supports full on-pilot editing capabilities and import from
  200.   several formats. Quiz yourself on the honor system or using multiple
  201.   choice. 50% of income from Flash!  goes to charity.

  206. The Translate program can export word entries to the Flash! program in two
  207. different ways, selectable via the preferences.
  208.   --The Manual export mode will only export an entry if you press the Export
  209.     button on the main screen.
  210.   --The Automatic export mode will automatically export any words you look up
  211.     that have an exact match.  Words within words, or Closest match finds
  212.     will not automatically export as they may not have been the words you
  213.     were trying to learn.  You can always override this and export manually
  214.     by pressing the Export button.
  215.   --The None mode will turn off exporting altogether.

  218. --Cut, Copy, and Paste
  219. From the pull down menus, you can cut, copy, or paste to and from either word
  220. on the screen, and bring/take either word into/from another application (such
  221. as the memopad application).

  295. 04/08/98 - V1.24 - Major revision.  Fixed several major bugs including one
  296. that corrupted the indexing on some new entries when they are added.  Also,

  301. routine that caused foreign-to-english lookups to not find the exact

  330. but then crashes due to a problem with > 32K sizes in Hotsync 1.0.  Also
  331. fixed problem of program going into endless loop if there is no database
  332. loaded.
